TACS High School Sailing Team

TACS supports high school students who want to be able to compete in regional and national high school sailing events. This idea was brought to TACS by parents interested in having their sons and daughters compete at the high school level. To that end TACS can provide boats, coaches and the resources of the Cornwell Sailing Center to support local High School teams.

What is High School Sailing?

High school sailing competitions are sailed under the auspices of the Interscholastic Sailing Association . There are about 230 high school sailing teams across the country, sailing in regional regattas and eventually national events. The Mid-West Region (MidWest Inter Scholastic Sailing Association) hosts regattas in Traverse City, Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit.

Eligibility starts in the 9th grade, there are no specific age limits. This program will be for experienced sailors and we would assume that the student had previous sailing experience through programs such as TACS Advanced Sailing Camp or similar programs from other sailing organizations. 7th and 8th Grade students are welcome to particpate in practices with the team and some "open" regattas, but are not eligable to participate in MISSA championship competions.

What about boats?

High school events use 420's for crewed events and Lasers for single person events (fall Series). TACS has purchased 12 420's for use of the High School programs as well as in the youth learn to sail programs. The High School team will train in these 420s and Lasers.
